Interstice: Liminality Between Comfort and Overconsumption

I’ve always felt a strong pull toward exploring the intricate and enigmatic relationship between fashion and the world at large. At the core of this exhibition lies the idea of the uncanny, a feeling of discomfort that arises when something is both familiar and unfamiliar at once. To achieve this, I deliberately eschewed any unnecessary embellishments or flourishes, instead focusing solely on form and functionality in a way that leaves viewers slightly unsettled. The primary material used is shaggy rug fur, an impractical choice for practical clothing, which viewers must peer through to perceive the understated elegance beneath. This adds to the uncanny sensation, as viewers must look beyond the surface to truly connect with the installation.

The collection itself was initially generated by AI, with all prototyping conducted virtually in 3D. This allowed me to examine the darker aspects of overconsumption in the fashion industry without adding to the problem myself. My inspiration was drawn from a range of sources, including the growing issue of homelessness in our society and the potential of industrial fashion to help address it. In many ways, this exhibition represents a commentary on the need for simplicity and industrial design in fashion’s future, as we strive for more sustainable and socially responsible clothing.
