To Be Seen

ARTIST STATEMENT

“To Be Seen” was designed to reflect more profoundly on the unique, emotional, and sentimental connection between an individual and their bridal wear. This publication design highlights the individuality of five different brides through words, thoughts and photographs, brought to life through an up-cycled, one-of-a-kind gown. The art of fashion is constantly used as a reflection of identity, challenging societal norms to crush the narrative of what has been considered appropriate dress in the past. Like regular fashion, something as significant as bridal wear should never limit self-expression. Bridal wear should elevate a bride’s individuality, rather than suppress it. The foundation of my capstone composes an idea that takes a vintage item, a garment that has been previously loved and turns it into something that embodies representation. The publication design and creative direction further transform an inanimate object into something that perceives beauty in all its forms.
