ARTIST STATEMENT
“VEIN magazine is a collection of stories and statements surrounding East/Southeast-Asian identities whilst living in Western society. Stereotypes have defined Asian people all over the world and to combat this, VEIN aims to tell real stories of people with different backgrounds.
Based on my own experiences growing up in Canada as a Southeast-Asian woman, I wanted to create a collection of stories that are true to the tellers’ personal identities. East/Southeast Asians are often grouped together as the same or with similar experiences, however, each person is their own individual self with stories differentiated by small nuances. By accumulating these stories into one source, the magazine allows diverse narratives to be told together.
Highlighting themes of voluntary cultural assimilation, cultural appropriation, and stereotypes in mainstream media of East/Southeast Asian identities, VEIN’s goal is to educate, inform, and inspire anyone who comes across and reads the contents; whether Asian-identifying or not. “
