ARTIST STATEMENT
“Trigger Warning” is a collection that explores my lived experience with trauma and my own process of recovery, making associations to mental illness, abuse, and grief. The visual motifs are meant to be shamelessly edgy, representing traumatic events I’ve experienced without explicitly stating what they were. The garments are representative of my own feelings on my traumas, and myself. I will be exploring the theme with a mixture of punk, gothic, and avant-garde styles. I want to combine the feelings of misplaced vulnerability and regret with anger. The finished garments should communicate messages of chaos and pain through the mutilation of the delicate and the emergence of the savage. To end with an anecdote, I chose this topic because when I was still thinking of ideas I mentioned my idea of discussing mental illness with my ex’s family last year. To which they responded: “Why would anyone want to hear about that?”
