The Monstrous and Immortal Armour

ARTIST STATEMENT

This capstone collection draws upon transforming violence within feminist horror films. Elaine Scarry (1987) describes pain as a ‘weapon’ that tortures the body. As the female characters endure pain, the ‘monstrous-feminine’ (Creed, 1993) nature becomes a potent protector. For many ages, jewelry has proven to be a timeless adornment for the body. During the third millennium BC, significant figures were buried in valuable jewelry which is now displayed and viewed in museums. The idea of immortality connects to the mythical realm of monsters, vampires, and other creatures. My three sculptures that the jewelry lives in represent a shelter holding the immortal powers. In exploring both metal and acrylic construction, these pieces physically embody the mutated creatures.
